IELTS General Training vs Academic: Which Module for Immigration?

Choosing the correct IELTS module is critical for immigration applications. Most immigration authorities require IELTS General Training, but some pathways accept IELTS Academic as well. Submitting the wrong module can result in your application being rejected.

IELTS General Training is the most common module for immigration applications. Accepted by Canada (Express Entry, PNP), Australia (skilled migration), New Zealand, and most other countries for visa and permanent residency applications. The test focuses on everyday English used in social and workplace contexts, making it suitable for applicants moving abroad for work or settlement.

IELTS Academic is primarily designed for university admissions but is also valid for certain professional registration and immigration pathways. Australia, for example, accepts either module for all skilled migration visa subclasses (189, 190, 491).

How IELTS Scores Are Used in Points-Based Immigration Systems

Australia Points Test. Australia's General Skilled Migration points test awards 0 points for Competent English (IELTS 6.0 each), 10 points for Proficient (7.0 each), and 20 points for Superior (8.0 each). Those extra 20 points can push borderline applicants over the threshold.

New Zealand SMC. New Zealand's Skilled Migrant Category requires a minimum IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.5. While there are no bonus points for higher scores, meeting this threshold is mandatory for eligibility.

How Long Are IELTS Results Valid for Immigration?

IELTS test results are valid for two years from the date of the test. Most immigration authorities require that your IELTS score is still within its validity period at the time of application submission. For programs with long processing times (such as Canada Express Entry draws or Australia visa queues), plan your test date carefully to ensure your results remain valid throughout the entire application process. If your results expire, you will need to retake the test before your application can proceed.
